Door stuck open
Safely, right now
- Leave it where it stopped. Don't pull it down by hand or keep pressing the button.
- Keep people, pets and cars out from under it.
- Don't pull the red release cord while the door is open. It can drop.
Door won't close
Safely, right now
- Give the remote a rest: each new try strains the opener and can bend the door.
- Don't step or reach under the door to move anything. If a bin, bike or snow is in the way, mention it when you call.
- Never tape over, bypass or move the little sensors near the floor to force it shut.
Spring snapped
Safely, right now
- Don't lift the door by hand and don't use the opener.
- Keep people, pets and cars clear of the door.
- If the door is open, leave the red emergency release alone: without the spring it can fall.
Car stuck inside
Safely, right now
- Never try to push through the door with the car.
- Don't pull the release or lift the door if it feels heavy or you heard a bang. That usually means a broken spring.
- Arrange another way to get where you are going for now. The car can wait inside.
Lifting cables on a door in Kent Gardens show their age as a few broken strands near the bottom bracket, long before they snap. We inspect them on every visit, replace both cables together with new bottom fixtures, and check the drums and bearings that wear alongside them so the door lifts evenly.

The fix, explained · Kent Gardens
What is the door doing?
EmergencyTorsion Spring ReplacementThe door starts to rise, gets about the height of your knee, then shudders and reverses.
The fix
The finished result is a door that behaves the way a good garage door should: it lifts by hand with light effort, stays where you leave it at mid-height, closes softly and lets the opener run with little strain. Reaching that point involves measuring the door, choosing a matched spring, winding it to the correct turns and…
Until then
When a spring breaks, the safe approach for the household is to leave the door where it is, keep people and vehicles clear, and avoid running the opener, which can damage the top section, the trolley or the gear drive.
Pull the manual release only when the door is fully closed unless a technician asks otherwise; a door disconnected while partly open can move on its own if the springs are out of balance.

EmergencyOff-Track Garage Door ResetThere was a loud bang from the garage, then silence.
The fix
The reason to stop pressing the wall button is that an opener cannot tell a racked door from a heavy one. Each cycle drives the tilted sections harder into the rails, bending hinges, tearing the track from the jamb and stressing the cables that are already out of place.
Until then
Never run the opener on a door that is off its track or hanging crooked; every cycle drives the racked door harder into the rails and can pull the track from the wall or tear a hinge.

EmergencyGarage Door Cable ReplacementStanding inside with the door closed, you notice the cable on the right side near the floor has gone fuzzy.
The fix
Two steel cables do the lifting on a sectional garage door. Each runs from a bracket at a bottom corner up to the counterbalance, and the springs pull on the door through them.

EmergencyExtension Spring ReplacementOpen the door by hand and it drifts back down on its own, a little at first and then all at once.
The fix
Every extension spring should carry a containment cable, and replacement is the moment to make sure yours do. A containment cable runs through the centre of the spring and is anchored at both ends, to the rear hanger and to the bracket at the front of the track.

The fix
Emergency release repair puts the manual disconnect on an opener into working order. That disconnect is the red handle on a cord below the rail, the spring-loaded lever it pulls, and the trolley that lets go of the door when the lever is thrown and grips it again when the two are brought back together.
Until then
Pull the release with the door fully closed whenever possible, and keep the opening clear as you do.
Lift a door by its handles or the gripping points on the panel face, never at the joint between sections, which closes as the door bends around the track.
Book soonGarage Door Opener Diagnosis and RepairFor a few days there was a grinding sound whenever the door started moving.
The fix
Most openers built in the last fifteen years report their own trouble. When something is wrong the head unit blinks its lights in a count, an up arrow and a down arrow flashing in a pattern, or a status light repeating a number.
Until then
Pull the release with the door fully closed whenever possible, and keep the opening clear as you do.
Never drive a vehicle at a closed door to get out; the door collapses and the stored tension in the counterbalance is released.

What the census means at the door
27%
Newer homes. About 27% of homes in Oakville were built in 1980 or earlier, according to the 2021 Census.
Households in newer neighbourhoods often use the garage as the main entrance every day, which puts far more cycles on the door in a year than an older single door would see. A tune-up schedule matched to that use keeps the springs and opener working within their design.
59%
A mix of homes. Single-detached houses make up about 59% of homes in Oakville (2021 Census).
In mixed neighbourhoods, noise matters differently from one address to the next. A detached house with a bedroom above the garage and a townhouse with a neighbour through the wall both benefit from a belt-drive opener and nylon rollers, and we explain the difference either way.

Ask us to look at your door in Kent Gardens.
Every door in Kent Gardens gets a safety check as part of the visit, whatever the reason we came. Photo-eyes are aligned, the auto-reverse is tested, the balance is confirmed and the cables are inspected. If something is close to failing, you hear about it plainly, with no pressure to act that day.

Nothing hidden. Every part we replace, you can see. Every adjustment, we explain. If we find something unexpected, we stop and tell you before continuing.
Care with heavy parts. Springs and cables are handled with the right tools and a steady method, and the door is secured before any tension is released.
Clear about what comes next. Before we leave, you know what was done, what to watch for, and when the door might want attention again.

Answers in plain language
My door is quite old. Is an inspection still worthwhile?
Yes, and often more so. Age alone does not say how much life is left in a spring or a roller, but condition does, and an inspection measures condition. Many older doors are sound and simply need a few worn parts and fresh lubricant. Where the report shows several items coming due at once, you can weigh planned repairs against a new door with real information rather than a guess.
I only tapped the door with the bumper. Why is it off its track?
A sectional door is strong in the direction it travels and surprisingly easy to push sideways at a single roller. A light nudge on the bottom section can flex the track lip enough for the roller to slip out, after which the section twists and the rollers above follow. The good news is that this kind of event usually leaves the cables and springs alone, so the reset is often rollers, a re-formed track lip and a hinge check.
What is the difference between a lift cable and a safety cable?
A lift cable does the work: it connects the door's bottom corner to the spring system and carries the door's weight. A safety or containment cable does no lifting at all. It runs through the middle of an extension spring and is anchored at both ends so that if the spring breaks, the pieces stay put. Torsion springs sit on a shaft and do not need one.
Is a smart, app-connected opener diagnosed any differently?
The mechanical and electrical checks are identical, since the app is just another control. What is added is the connection: whether the head unit is on the home network, whether the app reports a fault code you can read off your phone, and whether a door-position sensor or hub has lost its pairing. Because the wall control and remotes work independently of the network, a door that fails on every control is a hardware question, not a connection one.
